Thelma (2024)
Thelma follows the story of an elderly woman named Thelma, portrayed by June Squibb, who navigates the challenges of aging and self-reliance after the death of her husband, Teddy. Living alone in their former home, Thelma has developed a close bond with her grandson, Danny, who regularly checks in on her and helps her manage daily tasks, including her computer skills.
The plot takes a turn when Thelma becomes a victim of a scam, mistakenly believing that Danny has been in an accident, leading her to send $10,000 to the scammers. Upon realizing she’s been duped and facing the prospect of being placed in assisted living, Thelma resolves to retrieve her money, igniting a daring adventure that brings her both challenges and unexpected support.
Enlisting the reluctant help of Ben, an old friend and widower, Thelma embarks on a journey to confront the scammers. The duo navigate various obstacles, including their own personal struggles, as they work together to devise a plan. Their friendship deepens as they confront their fears and regrets, leading to moments of both humor and poignancy.
Throughout her quest, Thelma displays an indomitable spirit, refusing to be defined by her age or circumstances. The film explores themes of resilience, the importance of community, and the struggle for independence in the later stages of life. As Thelma's journey unfolds, it becomes a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the bonds that sustain us.
The film has garnered critical acclaim for its thoughtful portrayal of aging and relationships, providing a balance of lightheartedness amid serious topics.
